My partner sustained a life-changing injury while working for a multinational meatworks company in Brisbane where he had been employed for over thirty years, and after a botched back surgery through work cover he was left with permanent nerve damage and permanent ‘drop foot’, which completely altered the course of his life. After three decades of dedicated service, he found himself unable to continue in the job he loved, facing not only the physical loss of his active lifestyle—he had always been extremely fit—but also the emotional and psychological toll of daily medications, frequent specialist and rehab appointments, and the overwhelming challenge of adjusting to his new reality.

What followed was a long and grueling legal battle against an employer who refused to act fairly. Not only was my partner physically and psychologically impacted by the injury, but the stress of dealing with a company that seemed determined to avoid paying a reasonable settlement made the process even more draining. It truly felt like a David and Goliath situation, and if it weren't for Sean we couldn't have made it through.

Along with his team of expert barristers and counsel, Sean Roche was an absolute lifeline. His intelligence, thorough understanding of the law, and deep insight into how large corporations operate gave us the best possible chance at a fair outcome. The process was so long and drawn out—with hurdles at every turn—and Sean provided unwavering support and guidance throughout. He always made sure we knew what to expect at every stage and helped us navigate the emotional strain of the situation. (As my partner’s primary support system, I also needed guidance at times when the stress was overwhelming, and Sean was always there to provide advice on how to proceed).

The pre-trial negotiations, in particular, were a critical turning point in the case, and with Sean’s expert advice we were able to reach an out-of-court settlement in the immediate weeks before the trial. While this was a good outcome, the whole experience was marred by the tactics used by my partner’s former employer who sought to drag out the process and intimidate him into accepting far less than what he deserved. It’s appalling that such companies would choose to fight tooth and nail to avoid a fair settlement for someone who had given them thirty years of dedicated service, but unfortunately this seems all too common in workplaces where all that matters is the almighty dollar, not the health of the workers who’ve actually made the company what they are today.

Pursuing a common law claim against an employer like this is not for the faint-hearted, but if you find yourself in this situation you’ll quickly realise that you’ll need a lawyer as skilled and dedicated as Sean. The employer you’re up against will hire top-tier legal teams—and by "top-tier," I mean the worst kind of human beings…their lawyers resorted to every underhanded tactic imaginable, using intimidation and delay at every turn in an effort to wear us down—and having someone like Sean, who not only knows the law but also understands the strategies these companies use, is absolutely essential to navigating this exhausting and often disheartening process.

Having the right Team, with the knowledge and expertise is qnother.
